The 70th Annual Cannes Film Festival has arrived, and Wednesday is opening night! As the most talked-about cinematic celebration of the year, the event runs from May 17 to 28 with international directors showcasing their work as A-listers from around the globe make their way to the French Riviera to see and be seen.

Following the Oscars and the Met Gala, the star-studded event is host to one of the most anticipated red carpets of the year. Here, FEMAIL surveys some of the greatest looks of all time.

From Charlize Theron's tailored tux to Madonna's outrageous cone bra, this is the official rundown of the good, the bad and the shocking — starting with a few notables from last year’s event.

Bella Hadid, 2016

Red hot: Bella Hadid, 20, turned heads in a red Alexandre Vauthier couture gown at the ‘Unknown Girl’ premiere last year

Bella Hadid, 20, turned heads in a red Alexandre Vauthier couture gown at the ‘Unknown Girl’ premiere last year. With a plunging neckline and thigh-high slit, the risqué number (worn sans underwear), was a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen.

But the risk paid off as Bella's look was one of the most talked about at the festival. Elizabeth Sulcer, the model’s stylist, revealed that she and Bella had worked together with the French designer to create something 'beautiful and iconic'. Mission accomplished!

Charlize Theron, 2016

Suited up: Charlize Theron, 41, doesn't need a ball gown to get attention. The actress wowed onlookers at ‘The Last Face’ screening last year in a Dior Couture tuxedo and Christian Louboutin pumps

With her crisp white button-up unbuttoned, her Cartier diamond necklace was on full display. The mom of two carried out the simplicity of her ensemble with a sleek, low bun and Christian Louboutin

Elle Fanning, 2016

Young and modern: Elle Fanning, pulled out all the stops while attending the premiere of her movie, ‘The Neon Demon’, in 2016. The 19-year-old wore a Zuhair Murad Couture gown that was elegant and edgy all wrapped up in a pretty pink package

All in the details: The strapless gown featured a corset top over a sheer skirt with a long train, and was embellished with three-dimensional roses. Barely-there makeup, a sleek updo and a Tiffany & Co. ruby pendant completed her leading lady look

 Elizabeth Taylor, 1957

Hollywood royalty: Elizabeth Taylor attended the 1957 Cannes Film Festival with her third husband, theater and film producer Mike Todd, wearing an off-the-shoulder ruched dress and a diamond tiara

Elizabeth Taylor attended the 1957 Cannes Film Festival with her third husband, theater and film producer Mike Todd, wearing an off-the-shoulder ruched dress and a sparkly tiara.

A gift from Mike, the head ornament dates back to the 1800s and is made of old mine-cut diamonds mounted in platinum and gold.

The design includes diamond encrusted alternating scroll motifs topped by single diamonds and separated by latticework. It was the second time jewel-obsessed Liz dazzled in the spectacular piece, she it wore it to the Academy Awards earlier that year.

Blake Lively, 2014

A classic beauty: Blake Lively, 29, wore a breathtaking Gucci Première black-and-white silk crepe fifties-inspired strapless gown, and over 180 carats in Lorraine Schwartz diamonds while attending the 'Captives' premiere in 2014

Not much can top a gal in Gucci! Blake Lively, 29, wore a breathtaking Gucci Première black-and-white silk crepe fifties-inspired strapless gown featuring a full skirt and a dramatic train, while attending the 'Captives' premiere in 2014.

The actress wore over 180 carats in Lorraine Schwartz diamonds including stud earrings, two necklaces, a natural pearl and unheated ruby and diamond bracelet and her own pink diamond engagement ring.

Angelina Jolie, 2008

A royal look: While pregnant with twins Knox and Vivienne, Angelina Jolie resembled a modern-day goddess in a Grecian-style green Max Azria Atelier gown and Bulgari jewels at the ‘Kung Fu Panda’ premiere at the Palais des Festivals in 2008.

While pregnant with twins Knox and Vivienne, Angelina Jolie resembled a modern-day goddess in a Grecian-style green Max Azria Atelier gown at the ‘Kung Fu Panda’ premiere at the Palais des Festivals in 2008.

Embracing the romanticism of her ensemble, the actress and humanitarian let her tresses flow loosely at her shoulders, accessorizing with minimal Bulgari jewels. The result — an effortlessly memorable look.

Eva Longoria, 2012

Fluff and fuss: She may be 5′ 2″, but American actress Eva Longoria, 42, added inches to her petite frame at the premiere of Wes Anderson’s 'Moonrise Kingdom'

She may be 5′ 2″, but American actress Eva Longoria, 42, added inches to her petite frame at the premiere of Wes Anderson’s 'Moonrise Kingdom'.

Her tremendous Marchesa gown featured such a long a train, the star (and her on-hand fluffer) had to adjust it with every step.

The ‘Desperate Housewives’ actress carried a Marchesa bejeweled clutch and wore her brown tresses in a loose updo with side-swept bangs.

After making her way down the red carpet and up the stars without tripping (an impressive feat!), Eva took to Twitter saying, 'Just climbed the mythical Red Stairs of Cannes. Such a huge emotion, and what a fantastic Electric look!'

It takes two: Her tremendous Marchesa gown featured such a long a train, the star (and her on-hand fluffer) had to adjust it with every step

 Julianne Moore, 2015

Tickled by this look: For the opening ceremony and premiere of ‘La Tete Haute’ (‘Standing Tall’), Julianne Moore, 56, selected a feather-and-sequin embellished Armani Privé gown and Chopard jewels.

With a feather-and-sequin bodice and beaded skirt, the gown was both chic — and whimsical! Her emerald earrings were the only pop of color needed.

Madonna, 1991

Expressing herself: What would pop icon Madonna, 58, wear to the screening of her movie, ‘In Bed With Madonna’, other than a conical bra, high-waisted undies and a cloak by Jean-Paul Gaultier

What would pop icon Madonna, 58, wear to the screening of her movie, ‘In Bed With Madonna’, other than a conical bra, high-waisted undies and a cloak by Jean-Paul Gaultier?

For added shock value, the ‘Express Yourself’ singer dropped her outer garment, flashing the crowd her skivvies. What can we say? She's a material girl!

Lupita Nyong'o, 2015

Seeing green: Lupita Nyong'o, 34, topped many best-dressed lists in 2014 during her award season run for ‘12 Years a Slave’. In 2015, she wowed at the Cannes premiere for ‘La Tete Haute’ in a one-of-a kind jade green chiffon plissé Gucci gown

Awesome accents: The stunning number featured a cape detail and plunging neckline with embroidered crystals, pink and blush silk flowers. She accessorized her updo with an antique gold Gucci hair accessory, and completed the look with some bling from Chopard

Jessica Biel, 2013

Love it or hate it: Jessica Biel, 35, took to the Cannes red carpet in 2013 to support husband Justin Timberlake at the ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ premiere. The actress ditched the traditional floor-length gown in favor of a feather-and- embroidered confection by Marchesa and Manolos

The actress ditched the traditional floor-length gown in favor of a feather-and- embroidered confection by Marchesa. She accessorized with a matching clutch by the design house, a Bulgari serpent necklace and Manolo Blahnik pumps.

Love it or hate, this look was pretty unforgettable.

Sophia Loren, 1955

La Dolce Vita: History states that Italian film actress Sophia Loren caused a stir at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival, becoming the most photographed woman at the event. She wore a gorgeous beaded gown, featuring a sweetheart neckline, corset bodice and pleated skirt, complete with black opera gloves and a diamond statement necklace

History states that Italian film actress Sophia Loren caused a stir at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival, becoming the most photographed woman at the event.

And how could she not in this gorgeous beaded gown, featuring a sweetheart neckline, corset bodice and pleated skirt.

The 'Two Women' leading lady completed the glamorous look with black opera gloves and a diamond statement necklace. Though the actress – who is still regarded to be one of the world's most beautiful women – grew up poor, La Dolce Vita clearly agrees with her.

Cate Blanchett, 2014

Picture perfect: For the ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2’ premiere, actress Cate Blanchett, 47, wore a Givenchy fall 2014 gown with embellished multi-colored bodice, sheer illusion back and black pleated skirt

Sartorial splendor: Always dressed to impress, the Australian star has become a favorite of the fashion set. She looked picture-perfect smiling for the cameras with a chic updo and Chopard drop earrings

Princess Diana, 1987

A lady of elegance: Princess Diana wore a powder blue bandeau chiffon dress and matching stole by her favorite designer, Catherine Walker, when attending the Cannes Film Festival in 1987

The Grace Kelly-inspired gown is now on display alongside some of the Princess' most memorable garments at the Diana: Her Fashion Story exhibit at Kensington Palace.

With her signature hairstyle and a bouquet of flowers, it's safe to say she ‘stole’ the show that year.

Rachel McAdams, 2011

Peek-a-boo: Before illusion dresses became trendy, Rachel McAdams, 38, wore one by Marchesa with Casadei pumps to the Cannes opening night dinner and ‘Midnight in Paris’ premiere in 2011

The embroidered red silk organza dress with peekaboo accents and cap sleeves was alluring and tasteful. A pair of 4-and-a-half-inch high Casadei pumps and voluminous waves completed her blonde bombshell look.

Björk, 2000

Party time: At the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, Björk, 51, brought the decorations. Her Marjan Pejoski pink tea-length dress resembled a honeycomb tissue paper ball — the kind you’d hang from the ceiling at a birthday party or bridal shower

Björk, 51, is a party starter. And at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, the actress and singer brought the decorations.

Her Marjan Pejoski pink tea-length dress resembled a honeycomb tissue paper ball — the kind you’d hang from the ceiling at a birthday party or bridal shower.

We wouldn't expect anything less of the ‘Dancer in the Dark’ star — or Marjan. The Macedonian fashion designer is also responsible for creating the iconic swan dress Björk wore to the Oscars the following year.

Diane Kruger,  2012

Go big or go home: Diane Kruger, 40, attended the closing ceremony and ‘Thérèse Desqueyroux’ premiere in this Christian Dior Couture showstopper

It's a balancing act: Letting the gown's checks and lace embroidery be the focal point, Diane tied her hair away from her face and wore dainty diamond stud earrings. A swipe of mauve lipstick completed her look

Not many people can pull off wearing a gown that could fit at least five grown children under its skirt like Diane Kruger, 40, did in 2012.

Having worn many beautiful gowns throughout the festival’s run that year, the actress decided to go out with a bang, attending the closing ceremony and ‘Thérèse Desqueyroux’ premiere in this Christian Dior Couture showstopper.

Letting the gown's checks and lace embroidery be the focal point, Diane tied her hair away from her face and wore dainty diamond stud earrings. A swipe of mauve lipstick completed her look.

Natalia  Vodianova, 2005

I see London I see France: Natalia Vodianova, 35, was ahead of her time in this sheer Calvin Klein mini at the premiere of ‘Joyeux Noel’ in 2005

Natalia Vodianova, 35, was ahead of her time in this sheer Calvin Klein mini at the premiere of ‘Joyeux Noel’ in 2005.

Little did anyone know that exposed pasties and panties would be a popular red carpet look 12 years later.

The Russian beauty pulled the over-the-top look together with a multi-layered necklace, strappy silver heels and a whole lot of confidence. They don't call her Supernova for nothing!

Bridgette Bardot, 1953

A mature look: Though Brigette Bardot was just 18 years old at the 1953 Cannes Film Festival, she wore a white floor-length gown, matching fur caplet and black opera gloves

French actress Brigette Bardot, 82, received a lot of media attention at the 1953 Cannes Film Festival after strolling the beach in her teeny weeny bikini.

In the evening, the 18-year-old 'Naughty Girl' star covered up in a mature ensemble consisting of a floor-length white gown, matching fur shrug and black opera gloves –a look well beyond her teenage years.

Jennifer Aniston, 2004

Attention grabber: Jennnifer Aniston, 48, took to the Cannes red carpet to support then-husband Brad Pitt at the ‘Troy’ premiere in 2004. The actress took a departure from her boring black ensembles, in favor of a beaded white halter gown

Jennifer Aniston, 48, took to the Cannes red carpet to support then-husband Brad Pitt at the ‘Troy’ premiere in 2004.

It was during the time Brad was filming ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ with his soon to be second wife Angelina Jolie, and rumors of a romance between the pair began to surface.

But that night, the chatter was all about Jen. Taking a departure from her boring black ensembles, the ‘Friends’ star was radiant in a beaded white halter gown that hugged her curves in all the right places. With golden locks and sun-kissed skin, she looked like a true California beach babe.

Nicole Kidman, 1996

Dancing queen: In a red flamenco style dress, Nicole Kidman, 49, put her mile long legs on full display at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival

We haven't seen Nicole Kidman, 49, show this much leg since the Cannes Film Festival in 1996.

In a red flamenco style dress, the 5′ 11″ stunner put her mile long legs on full display.

It was a rare color choice for the natural red head, but the body hugging silhouette fit her statuesque frame beautifully. At 28 years old, she may have had plans to go dancing afterwards.

Jennifer Lopez, 1998

Jenny from the block: 1998 was a big year for Jennifer Lopez. It was the year the 47-year-old became a household name starring in the biographical drama, ‘Selena’. Since then, the she has become a true fashion icon, and it's unlikely we’ll be seeing her in a look like this again

1998 was a big year for Jennifer Lopez. It was the year the 47-year-old became a household name starring in the biographical drama, ‘Selena’.

Since then, the actress/singer/dancer has become an even bigger star and a true fashion icon.

Whether she's being fun and flirty in Christian Siriano, or showing off her enviable curves in Zuhair Murad, ‘The Shades of Blue’ star never disappoints. That’s why it’s unlikely we’ll be seeing her in a look like this again — we just can’t forget it.

Grace Kelly, 1955

Screen siren: Grace Kelly attended the 1955 Cannes Film Festival with French actor Jean-Pierre Aumont (pictured), donning a black, empire waist silk taffeta gown and white fur stole. Her white gloves and smooth updo made for a timeless ensemble that's memorable – but not showy

Though Grace Kelly attended the 1955 Cannes Film Festival with French actor Jean-Pierre Aumont (pictured), the future Princess of Monaco met her husband, Prince Rainier III, on the French Riviera that same year.

The 'Rear Window' actress took an elegant approach to dressing, as seen here in a black, empire waist silk taffeta gown and white fur stole.

Her white gloves and smooth updo made for a timeless ensemble that's memorable – but not showy. This is the look of a true movie star and eternal style icon.

 Kirsten Dunst, 2016

Taking chances: Starting at the Opening Night Gala and the 'Café Society' premiere, Kirsten Dnst, 35, showcased her style savvy in out-of-the-box fashion choices, like this pink Gucci number with sequined floral appliqués and a black bow-tie belt

On the jury at last year's film festival, Kirsten Dunst, 35, used the Cannes red carpet as her own personal runway.

Starting at the Opening Night Gala and the 'Café Society' premiere, the actress showcased her style savvy in out-of-the-box fashion choices, like this pink Gucci number with sequined floral appliqués and a black bow-tie belt.

Chopard jewelry and smoky eye makeup completed this ladylike look.

 Dita Von Teese, 2006

Budding fashionista: At the 'Southland Tales' premiere in 2006, Burlesque artist Dita Von Teese was picture perfect in an off-the-shoulder black gown featuring cascading burgundy blooms

Burlesque artist Dita Von Teese is a modern-day pinup who's been wowing audiences with her glamorous vintage-inspired style for years.

The 44-year-old typically wears one-of-kind ensembles, and doesn’t disclose the designer. At the 'Southland Tales' premiere in 2006, she was picture perfect in an off-the-shoulder black gown featuring cascading burgundy blooms on the bodice.

With perfectly quaffed hair, a fresh red manicure, and flawless makeup, nothing about her Old Hollywood look appeared out of the ordinary, except possibly her date Marilyn Manson and their matching lipstick!

Twinning: With perfectly quaffed hair, a fresh red manicure, and flawless makeup, nothing about her Old Hollywood look appeared out of the ordinary, except possibly her date Marilyn Manson and their matching lipsticick
